My dear Henry
I found your letter on my table when I
returned from Church this morning — I am almost as
lonely as you to day — Clara Mc Clallen and Fred
went to Canandaigua yesterday — Clara is to go to
Rushville to see her Sister — she will probably return
tomorrow or next day — Fred is to make a visit
at his Aunty's when she is to come home with him
Poor Brown died the day after you left — I attended
her funeral on Friday — How many eulogies and
panegyriks would have been written and spoken
had a woman in the higher walks of life died
possessed of but a tithe of poor Brown’s virtues
She has sacrificed her life to maintain the helpless
child left to her care by a dying sister enduring
patiently poverty disease and death only desiring to
be relieved from the apprehension of seeing her charge the

inmate of an almshouse — Poor Rhoda will never know the
value of the friend she has lost until the “lot of women”
is upon her and she in her turn is called upon to
practice self denial to weep and pray for the welfare
of those she loves — Jane came home Thursday
afternoon and relieved me in the care of Willie
his eyes are not quite well yet I think there
is still something of the erysipelas remaining in
his system — he feels lost without Fred and enquires
many times during the day "where Freddy gone"?
I received a letter from Augustus Seward yesterday
saying he intended removing the remains of his mother
to Florida some time in October and should you
think proper he would be gratified to have Clarence
join him somewhere on his way to that place —
Augustus is to go next week to Cincinnati —
I am preparing our Augustus to leave home but not
with any lightness of heart — A separation of this kind
though it may fail to benefit him as much as you
seem to anticipate will not fail to estrange him
