Original letter from John Chamberlain Clark to William Henry Seward, copied by
William Henry Seward and sent to Samuel Sweezey Seward on March 28, 1844.
Will my good friend Seward
Pardon the abundant trouble I give
him? By the enclosed letter from
your father
latter for’d to me, there seems to be a
misunderstanding as to the date from
which interest on his loan & mortgage
commences–I regret this deeply–
You will recollect that I inquired of you
when I rec’d the money, at what time the
Int should commence & that you suggested
the 9th Dec the terms you rec’d from your
father – to which I readily assented – and
would with equal pleasure fixed upon any
other day_ But having fixed on the 9th of
Dec I had made no arrangements to meet the
Int til the 9th June– I have just sent my

lumber to market which absorbed every penny
of my cash.
Please write your father ex-
plaining the matter, and release
me from the embarrassments I feel
growing out of a connection in his mind
that there has been a wilful want of purse
notably in paying the Int.
It shall be promptly paid at all
times in NY city funds.
Truly your obliged friend
