Auburn March 25th 1846
My Dear Father,
I have received your letter of the 19th of March
on the subject of a joint note made by you with George
D. Wickham
Birth: 1772 Death: 1845-11-16
and others to the Bank of Orange County for about
$1400 —
The note is barred by the Statute of Limitations,
But the Bank will say that it is Kept good by the
Inducements — To this I answer that I think it doubtful
whether the Inducements affect anybody except him
who paid the money induced — It does not appear
who made the payments whether you, Wickham or
who else — Let this be accurately ascertained, send early
information given me —
It will not do for you to pay this note unless obli-
ged to by law — At the same time there is no particular pros-
pect of advantage from delay — When a rent shall be
instituted let a copy of the Declaration or of the text be
mailed at Goshen or New Burg and sent to me here
immediately, we will put in the defense and give notice
to Wickham’s estate and the other parties — So that if you
are obliged to pay it you may regain contribution —
I wish Mr. Grier
Birth: 1802-09-27 Death: 1878-12-20
to call on Mr. Gott
Birth: 1814-05-25 Death: 1869-01-06
the Attorney of
the Companies and ascertain whether they are making any
and what calculation to provide for this note — Let the
^answer^ be stated in writing to me by Mr. Grier —

I send this letter to the care of George M. Grier, Esq. that
he may record it and attain without delay the information
I need.
Affectionately your son
William H. Seward
Samuel S. Seward, Esq.
I shall draw on you for the ammt of the Bond and
Mortgage which Mr. Moyer
Unknown
wrote about - and which
will be sent to you within a day or two — The ammt is about
$1100 —
