Auburn August 25th 1849
My dear Brother,
We have just heard by a telegraphic
dispatch from Goshen that Grandfather Seward
at five o’clock yesterday afternoon. He had been for
a long time growing gradually worse and for some
days before his death no hopes were entertained of
his recovery. Several messages by telegraph have come
within the last three days desiring Father
immediately down, but he is attending court at
Cooperstown, to which place the telegraph does not
extend. We have however written to him and he
will probably reach Florida in time for the
funeral, although too late to see Grandfather before
his death. Mother
Florida, Clarence
I hope you have applied for a furlough.
We are all very desirous of seeing you here as early as
as possible
Affectionately, your brother
