My Dear Willie
You have not remembered
to write a word to your Father about
home, I hope you will not be so forget-
ful any more.
I hear that you have been at
Syracuse in pursuit of a pony. – It is
all very well for little boys to ride
and amuse themselves, but I want you
to know that in this world no body
has a right to live and act for him-
self alone. Each of us must find his
own pleasure in helping others along
as well as himself. I hope that you
are satisfied how important it is for
you to study diligently in school, so as

to make up the time you have lost by
the affliction of your eyes.
I hope especially that you try to
find out every day what you can
do to give comfort and help to
your mother
know that they must be very lonely
when your brothers are absent from home
as well as myself
Pray tell me how the garden is
and how it looks, whether we shall
have strawberries and cherries, peaches
plums, apples, grapes and nuts.
Affectionately your father
