Washington Jan. 12.
My Dear Fred,
Mr. Green
and gratify your wish for a Congressional Directory.
Our Loco Foco aspirants are troubled
by the Kossuth
too deeply the South will strike back. If they
do not commit themselves deeply they lose East
with then West. With this key you can under-
stand what has happened and is to happen.
Mr Webster
Kossuth Congressional Banquet. He withdrew it on my
advice. This account for my responses to his
speech and for The James
Mr Weed
an apostle of free trade, and that Bishop Hughes
opposition to him might embarrass us. I hope that we
shall be able to avoid both ends.
Affectionately
William H Seward
