My dear Mrs Seward,
This is my first
day of rest, after many
various pilgrimages & this
is the first note of friend-
ship which I write. It
was kind in you to re-
member me, as you did, after
I left Auburn, & I should
have sooner responded; but
[top Margin] he is well. Remember me to him
kindly, & believe me
Ever sincerely yours,
Charles Sumner

you will accept even these
tardy words.
Since leaving Auburn I
have been constantly occu-
pied-as you may have
seen from the papers; but
I have now closed these labors
for the present. In the
city of New York I was
honored by large audiences
who listened faithfully even
to the end of my long address.
I dined once with the
Fishes & found them
pleas-
ant & kind as always.

through Penn, Ohio, Indiana
to St. Louis, then round by
Iowa, Wisconsin & the Lakes
home. The weather is
now very agreeable, but
I expect soon to find
hot days.
The Herald announces a
grand conspiracy between your
husband
& c, all further are represented
in conclave at the Astor House.
For myself I have not had the
good fortune to see your hus-
band since I parted from him
at Auburn, nor even to hear
of his whereabouts. I trust
