Auburn Sunday
June 8th
My dear Henry
I was glad to get
your letter from N. York
and very glad to see you
view matters in so
philosophical a manner
No person can be really
independent who seeks
political favour – I
think you decided
wisely about the letter –
Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
met us at
Utica – we came on
at 10 the next morning
found all well – the
house much deranged
by the work of the
masons which is still
unfinished – the garden
Page 2

is very pretty – Fred &
Anna
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02
are to come some
time this week –
Lazette
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03
is not well but
better than she has been –
Mr Garlinghouse
Birth: 1784-09-14 Death: 1862-02-22
came to
see you last evening – he
would like to go to Philadel-
-phia
but has not the means –
says I must tell you that
it is of no use to nominate
a man who is not a
tried free soil man –
no one else can obtain
half the votes which
would be given to such
an one – As an evidence
he says I must tell you
that Henry R. Selden
x

of
Rochester would vote for
you – but would not
vote for a dubious
Anti Slavery man –
Page 3

I write this in conformity
with his wishes though
I cannot well conceive
that you have any
thing to do in the matter –
Mr Garlinghouse is undoubt
edly right in saying none
but an undoubted Antislavery
man has any chance of
success – any body says
that with whom I talk –
The strength of the Antislavery
party at this time cannot
be tested by a half way
candidate, if the Democratic
can. Dont you think
it would be well to invite
George Grier
Birth: 1802-09-27 Death: 1878-12-20
to bring
Frances
Birth: 1801-01-16 Death: 1860-02-07
with him when he
comes to Philadelphia – or
will it be too warm? –
Will he come to Washington?
The prospect of having you
Page 4

at home engaged in occupations
more congenial to your
true nature than those
which now engross you
is a very pleasant one
for Lazette & I who
both know you well enough
to feel assured that you
will be much happier
here – you will be
useful any where –
Your own
Frances –
Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
wishes me to ask
you to send the contracts
for the house of which
Mr Brown
Unknown
has written
to you –
