Indian Key
January 4th 1857
Dear Mother
I left Key West on last
Tuesday and have been 6 days coming
to this place a distance of 80 miles
it being very nearly calm most of
the way; my work for the winter
will be some 15 miles to the NE
of this place. Every thing here
looks very much as it did last
year, though I think the prospects
are that we shall have a much
milder winter here than last.
There are several vessels here at
present two just arrived from Phila-
delphia with the materials for Con-
structing a light House near this
place, so that there will more
be going on near me than any
season before.
I believe they are endeavoring to
conclude a Treaty with the
Seminoles at Tampa for their

peaceful removal though I have not
heard as yet with what success.
By the time this letter reaches you
the session of Congress will be nearly
half through. I suppose Anna
are with you before this time.
Give my love to all.
Your Affectionate Son
