Astor House Thursday morning
June 18.
My Dearest Frances
After leaving Albany yesterday
morning I met the New York newspapers
from which I learned that the political
disputes between Mayor Wood
Birth: 1812-06-14 Death: 1881-02-14
and our
friend Draper
Birth: 1795-04-14 Death: 1866-11-06
and his associatesUnknown
had
ripened into a conflict attended with
violence, and I knew then my presence
here in a time of such excitement was
liable to be misinterpreted. I therefore
stopped last night at General Webb’s
Birth: 1802-02-08 Death: 1884-06-07
house, where I had the pleasure of
finding the General himself as well
as Mrs Webb
Birth: 1826-01-02 Death: 1890-01-16
and her children
Birth: 1856-04-24
Death: 1928-12-24
Birth: 1853-12-04
Death: 1948-03-19
Birth: 1852-05-06
Death: 1900-06-18
Birth: 1851-01-31
Death: 1926-10-29
The young ladies
Birth: 1830-12-14
Death: 1918-12-04
Birth: 1827-11-30
Death: 1896-10-03
I spent a very pleasant evening with the
family and enjoyed all the surroundings
of the magnificent villa more than I
can describe.
This morning I came to the City,
but I have not registered my name
and I am hoping to avoid noticing
although of course I meet every body
I have nothing as yet from Professor
Bache
Birth: 1806-07-19 Death: 1867-02-17
, and nothing from home.
Of all the men whom I desired to
consult about business, for Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11
,
I fail in finding any at home to
day. I think now that I shall go
home with Grinnell
Birth: 1803-03-03 Death: 1877-11-24
and consult
him at Conn at his country seat
this evening, and then return to
the City tomorrow morning to peruse the
object before me.
Incidental to this visit was
the transaction of some business with
Samuel Blatchford
Birth: 1820-03-09 Death: 1893-07-07
, but he is in
Court to day.
A further purpose was the
procuring a lithograph map of
our city lots. I have this business
under way.
Mr Weed
Birth: 1797-11-15 Death: 1882-11-22
is here, Governor King
Birth: 1788-01-03 Death: 1867-07-07
&c — I shall dine with them here
and go up to night to stay with
Grinnell if I meet him and if I
do not then with Webb.
Of course I do not yet see when
I shall leave the city.
Your own Henry
