Sunday Dec 19 th
My dear Sister
I am very tired to night
yet I cannot go to bed without
writing a line to you – it being some
days since I have written – I had set
apart this day to write to you & Clara
Birth: 1793-05-01 Death: 1862-09-05
both, but Henry
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
invited the Napiers'

& Mrs
John B Davis
Birth: 1829-07-02 Death: 1916-11-23
– I was quite ill this morning and thought I should not
be able to go to dinner but grew better
while putting the house in order for
the company – Henry and Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
went
yesterday to Silver Spring with Lady
Napier & her children

Sam Blatchford
Birth: 1820-03-09 Death: 1893-07-07
spent a portion of the
evening with me – at which time I
talked so long that I had congestion
^to the chest^ & slept none in consequence – Sam
told me considerable Auburn news
which Mrs Morgan
Birth: 1813-02-16 Death: 1893-10-14
had communicated to his wife
Birth: 1817-08-27 Death: 1901-06-12
in letter of 6 & 8 pages Among other things that the Dennis'

Death: 1866-05-31
were to come back to Auburn to live –
He seemed to think it cause for
congratulation – says Caroline Dennis
Birth: 1832 Death: 1898
is uncommonly clever – Sam seems to
consider himself established in the
beau monde of N. York – talks of
giving dinners &c &c – There is very
little left of the boy he was when
we first knew him – He is shrewd
& worldly, & calculating – has lost
much of the warmth of manner
which used to make him attractive –
His father

and two sisters

together – Julia has a baby
Birth: 1858-08-10 Death: 1913-08-13
– I
think a boy – Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
was out when Sam
was here – I could not help wishing to show
him the man who had grown from
the boy against whom he entertained
such uncharitable feelings 8 years
ago – Sam enquired about you – where
you were living this winter & whether
you were coming here – John Davis
who dined here is a son of "honest
John

" who was Bancrofts
Birth: 1800-10-03 Death: 1891-01-17
secretary to the Court of St James – He married
2 years ago Frederica King one of
the daughters of James King
Birth: 1791-05-08 Death: 1853-10-03
whom Frances
Birth: 1826-12-12 Death: 1909-08-24
knew – John is much im- proved in person & manners since I
last saw him – She is neither young
or pretty but sensible, natural
in manner & agreeable – John came
to attend court – they leave tomorrow
are keeping house in New York –
Monday morning —
I fear that you cannot read what I wrote
last night as I find it difficult
myself – It is a dark rainy morning
but not cold – that is cause for gratitude
I write in a room without fire of any
kind – John
Birth: 1827
is making fire in the furnace
I went in Will's room – found him awake
& smiling – Henry & Fanny are asleep &
Bell
Birth: 1858
is so lazy he has not even crawled
into bed since I got up – I will
write to Clara to day and send her
