London May 28th 1859
My dear Fanny,
The hospitalities of this Capital
so completely engross my time that I have scarce-
-ly leisure to record them. On Wednesday morning
I breakfasted with Lord

and Lady
Haverton
Hatherton
Birth: 1809-04-01 Death: 1897-05-16
who have become already most sympathizing friends
I dined merrily with the Dallas family

and enjoyed many reminiscences of friends
and events in America. On Thursday, I went
out to Chiswick where I lunched (at two
p.m). with a party invited by the Earl
Birth: 1815-05-11 Death: 1891-03-31
and Lady Granville
Birth: 1812 Death: 1860-03-14
. It is one of their several
Country seats — and is a lovely place — The
principal guests were the Count de Paris
Birth: 1838-08-24 Death: 1894-09-08
son ^and heir^ of Louis Philippe
Birth: 1773-10-06 Death: 1850-08-26
and
of course now pretender to the throne of France. Lord
St Germans
Birth: 1798-08-29 Death: 1877-10-07
and Lord Stanley
Birth: 1826-07-21 Death: 1893-04-21
. I
think the Count de Paris a very amiable man.
Few men are so intelligent as Lord Stanley.

Lady Granville after the lunch retired to
the shelter of a grove of Cedars of
Lebanon of great age and of almost immeasura
ble dimensions, and there we talked over
the political affairs of the world. She
has given me an invitation to come to
her home in the evening of every day while
I am in London. Evening here begins at
10, oclock.
I dined the and spent the evening
of the same day with Sir James
Birth: 1804-04-07 Death: 1869-03-06
and Lady Tennent
Birth: 1806 Death: 1883-04-21
, a very splendid
enter- -tainments, the evening one with fine singing
by some Italian and native artists.
Yesterday Dr Mackay
Birth: 1814-03-27 Death: 1889-12-24
gave a me a very elegant dinner at the Reform
Club, where I met many of the leading
statesmen of the times.
To day I dine with Mr Edward

,
a very distinguished public man, and tonight I attend a party or recep-
tion given by Lady Palmerston
Birth: 1787-04-21 Death: 1869-09-11
. Nothing could surpass the kindness
shown me here. The Press is very generous,
and leading persons of all classes are
honoring me with their calls and entertain-
ments. To day I was at the Earl of
Shaftesburys
Birth: 1801-04-28 Death: 1885-10-01
, and at Lambeth Palace the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury —
While there attending that Protestant Relation

lodgings.
