Paris Saturday night July 30.
I breakfasted this morning at 11 with Dr Castle and
his family. The entertainment though simple had some
peculiarities. First, the House in the Rue de Penthievres
is one ^in^ which Dr Franklin lived when beginning his
illustrious career in France so directly influential
in securing the independence of the United States
through the French Alliance - Secondly we had
wine for breakfast - coffee and tea after it, as if
it were dinner. Third, on my protesting my exemption
from English prejudice one of the ladies a noble
matronly Portuguese lady lighted a real Havana
cigar and smoked with the gentlemen I say
but Dr Franklin's successor is a philosopher
and a Republican - We parted only at two p m. -
Then I drove to return visits, and at 4 I called
at the American Legation where my reception
seemed kind and free. Then to dinner with
the Grinells, there dining walking and
the Circus filled up the day. I send you
an extract of a Parisian Journal - You will smile
at the ludicrous mistakes it contains - But it
is illustrative of life in Paris
In my drives I went to the Place of the
Bastille. It is now distinguished by a noble
column erected in the time of Louis Philippe I think

to the revolutionary
republicans of 1830.

Mr De Sartiges has a relapse at the Baths
Sumner is at the Baths at Havre - He returns home
in the Autumn. Lord Napier arrives at the Hague
