Auburn April 17th
My dear Father
Our Barn together
withe the Carriage House & sheds were
entirely burned down this evening[ . ]
Reason:
The two horses were smothered before
it was possible to get them out, although
every effort was made.
The fire first started as near as I
can judge in the Cow shed, about 1/2 past
seven while I was at tea, before I
could reach the barn it was entirely
enveloped in famflames so much so that
it was impossible to enter. The
middle shed & Carriage House were ^not^ thenen on
fire but in consequence of the high wind
and scarcity of water these buildings could
not be saved. The house for a time
was in a little danger but by a well
directed application of water there was
no damage done. The fire is still
burning all although we anticipate no
further danger from the sparks.

I have a number of policemen
together wi stationed about the fire and
around the premises, to take care of the
article removed from the Carriage House &c[ . ]
Reason:
I shall remain up all night and see
that every thing is kept safe. Nothing
in the house has been disturbed.
The cows & calfs were got out safely
and are now in Mr Morgans
I shall let them remain until tomorrow
and then remove them up to Aunties
I will endeavor to have the ruins removed
as fast as possible and a temporary fence
put up on Wm st for the present.

were smothered by the smoke before
the fire reached them, in which case they
could have suffered very little.
During your absence last summer I
had the barns & ^Carriage Hous^ insured for $400 which will
probably be paid[ . ]

Your Affectionately son

Aunty was too unwell to come
up to the house[ . ]
Reason:
The building was very evidently
set on fire, as it was closed &
locked before dark, no light having
been around there for more than
a week[ . ]
