Washington, Jan. 30th
Wednesday
My dear Mother,
I reached here
last night and found Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
at dinner with James Horne
Birth: 1804 Death: 1874-06-12
and Rufus King.
Birth: 1814-01-26 Death: 1876-10-13
He is over-
whelmed with letters & visitors
imploring him to save the
Union in each of their
hundred different ways,
and is the only person who
appears to be entirely patient
with each, unconverted by
any, and confident, cheerful
& hopeful about the result.
Just now a Committee of
twenty five New York Merchants

have possession of him in the parlor. He has
somewhat taken them aback
by telling them that the best thing
they can do to save the
Union is to lend it money
at 7 per cent, instead of
increasing the panic and
its difficulties by extorting 12,
I do not think he wil l
be able to get any at
present, but he may before
the 4th of March.
I have taken the back
room up stairs. The house
looks comfortable and substantial
Affectionately your son
Frederick
