Anna
Thursday,
March 8 th
1861
My dear Mother.
Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
thinks we must have a Steward.
Mr Cass
Birth: 1782-10-09 Death: 1866-06-17
highly recommen- ded his man
Unknown
, but I hear he quarrels with the
Servants – a great fault
I think. Another, an
Englishman
Unknown
who lived with the Paraguay Minister
Birth: 1822-03-16 Death: 1889-01-26
I think would do better.
He waits at Baron Gerolts
Birth: 1797-03-05 Death: 1879-07-27
& Lord Lyons
Birth: 1817-04-06 Death: 1887-12-05
dinners & is highly recommended
by them & Demonet
Death: 1866
. Now John
Birth: 1827
told them at Demonet's, ‘he would
not stay under a white
man, that he had
been Steward five years,
& knew as much about
it as anyone.
I think John with
Henrys assistance will be
sufficient in this house,
or till Fall. If Nicholas
Birth: 1801-12-24 Death: 1893-02-15
comes he can do the
marketing. John applied
early in the Winter for
a place as messenger
in one of the Departments,
which I think he is
not likely to obtain.
What do you advise?
I am much obliged for
your kind offer to come
& help me. You need not
fear that I have too
much to do. There will
be very little if any
visiting after this week,
& by the time we move
there will be nothing
else to do. You know I
like moving. I will try
to do things as I think
you would like to have
them.
I shall probably trouble
you with many questions.
Eliza does extremely well,
I did not think she was
so capable.
Documents can be sent
till next December.
Letters are to be addressed
to the “Secretary of State”
instead of U. S. Senate
Mr Blatchford
Birth: 1820-03-09 Death: 1893-07-07
did not come last week, but
writes me is coming on
Friday & wants to know
If he may bring Mrs
Blatchford
Birth: 1817-08-27 Death: 1901-06-12
. I telegraphed I should expect them
both. Love to all. Anna.
[right Margin] After five hot days we have reached a
cool term. The Thermometer one day
stood at °83.
