My dear Son
I should like to
hear how you are all
getting on at Washington
this morning. I have
a letter from Fanny
from New York which
tells me they are there
safely. Since the floods
commenced you have
all seemed a great way
off. I think the road
from Washington to New
York has not suffered
so much as ours in
this part of the country.
We have been some

days without mail
in either direction
Rochester has suffered
very severely - now
the bridge across the
Cayuga Lake is sub-
merged and some
portion of it washed
away – so that it
cannot be used.
William
has applied for a
furlough
home next week though
he hardly thinks it
probable. McDougall
set out on his return
yesterday – was to be
in New York Friday,
that is tomorrow

and if he hears nothing
from Will, will go to
Martinsburg to spend
Sunday. Frances
Frank
Thursday – they are boarding
at Mrs Browns
Street - were here to dinner
yesterday. Frances is pretty
well, though she was not
when she came. Frank is
very well – quite a large
boy – 11 years old.
He is sitting by the table
now drawing a man.
I do not think Frances
intends to occupy her house
in Canandaigua again. She
has packed her furniture –
had some sold at auction
and offers the house for sale.

She has taken a little farm
of 8 acres 6 or 7 miles from
Canandaigua where she is
to build a small house
to occupy in the Summer,
and will spend her Winters
in some town. This is her
present plan – it may be
changed. Henry
somewhere in Pennsylvania or
Virginia acing as attorney
for some oil company.
We had two summer-like
days but this morning the
ground is covered with
snow again. Aunty
Jenny
says “Uncle Ghu must
come home.” I hope he
will come while the
Summer lasts this year
May God bless you my
son - very affectionately
