My dear Willie
I have your excellent
letter of the 11th instant and
I approve entirely of your plans
about the work upon the house.

but I try to rise above the
grief that can find no consola-
tion.
The political excitements of the

that looks to the welfare of
this country and mankind
in a distant future. In this
respect all is well. I thought
for a long time that Mr. Lincoln
was more fortunate than I in
falling under the assassins blow,
I now think he would have
had reason to had he
lived to forgive the enemies
of his country and his own
because they knew not what
they did
