My dear Augustus
We have summer to day – a
thunder shower - & after that the tempera-
ture mild and balmy – Anna
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02
writes me
that last week was warm in Washing-
ton – the trees are nearly all in leaf
& she has had the grass cut for the sec-
ond time – Mr Weed
Birth: 1797-11-15 Death: 1882-11-22
was here on Sunday
he said Harriet
Birth: 1819-02-06 Death: 1893-11-01
was still weak and
her leg still gives her much trouble –
I hear nothing more of him going abroad
and think probably they have given it
up – Dr Wilson
Death: 1889-03-22
has been in Washing-
ton and has now gone west – he
finds Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
& Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
much improved
in two years – Anna is still having
much pain in her finger yet – the
Dr
Birth: 1817-07-21 Death: 1883-04-05
has put a splint on it as it is
growing quite crooked – on Sunday
Father attempted his usual excursion to the
Great Falls - He & Senator Anthony
Birth: 1815-04-01 Death: 1884-09-02
started
but Anna thought the heavy rains would
prevent their going all the way –
All are well here – Willie’s
Birth: 1864-11-10
arm is still
splintered but he is doing nicely – Mr
Birth: 1829-07-22 Death: 1872-06-22
–
& Mrs.
Birth: 1832-04-27 Death: 1903-12-20
Bostwick came up on Friday – I have
not seen her – I think Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
considers it
doubtful about them going a journey in
their carriage – he says it will do to talk
about – It would take too much time –
At present I have Bruno – Fred’s dog – I
think Miss Martin
Birth: 1838-05-05 Death: 1884-01-26
became tired of it
so one day she brought him here – I wrote
to Anna who said in a months time
they would have a place for him –
They fully expect to break up at Washington
at the close of the trial – I cannot think
they will – neither do I believe the im-
peachment will be sustained – though
it is the prevailing opinion here & in
Washington that it will be – a
few days will determine —
Frances
Birth: 1826-12-12 Death: 1909-08-24
came out on Monday and
went back on Friday leaving Frank
Birth: 1854-02-13 Death: 1931-05-23
with
me for a week longer – She was here
when your letter came & desired me
to give you her love when I wrote –
I must now tell you a pretty piece of
gossip I heard last night which a-
mused me very much – Mrs John Porter
Birth: 1800-04-12 Death: 1886-03-29
sister – Mrs. Lee
Birth: 1803 Death: 1899-03-30
– had a daughter
Death: 1914-07-06
married four years ago to a brother
Birth: 1800-08-23 Death: 1865-07-02
of the reigning Duke or Prince of
Schleswig Holstein
Birth: 1798-07-19 Death: 1869-03-11
- (The Lees are rich
& those German princes are poor & marry
American girls for their money -) He
renounced his claim to succeed his
brother in governing Holstein - & took
the family name of D Noer or De Nor –
he was 64 and she 20 – they went to
the east for a tour & traveled over
Egypt & Syria – with a large retinue
of servants – on their arrival in Bayreuth
he died – after an illness of a few days
and she returned to her mother who was in
Paris – Last summer she & her mother came
to this country & spent several months
here – this spring they came again – and
during their stay here, they – or Madame
rather – received an order from the Duke
or Prince of Holstein to return to him
the court jewels which ( after the manner
of Mrs Lincoln
Birth: 1818-12-13 Death: 1882-07-16
–) she had appropria-
ted – or in other words had stolen –
It is said that the report originated
in Alonzo Beardsley’s
Birth: 1820-07-11 Death: 1906-08-14
family – perhaps they
think it no sin to take things on such a
magnificent scale – My informant
did not know if she had the jewels
with her or left them in Paris – Jerome
Bonaparte
Birth: 1784-11-15 Death: 1860-06-24
– when he stole the crown &
jewels of Westphalia carried them
with him in his travels –
Are you not coming here to see us
this summer ?
Your affectionate
Aunty
