San Francisco, April 15 1871.
My dear Father
We reached here on the
10th having been 20 days from
home & stopping on the way
at Chicago, Kansas City, Denver
& Salt Lake. At all of which
places I found many warm
friends of yours as well
as some of my own, our
party consists of Mr
Knapp
Jenny
much improved in health &
we are all enjoying our trip
very much, I am surprised
to find that I knew so many
people on the [ rout ]

of its inhabitants has settle
in the western states.
When it came to the point of
leaving home & the children
for two months Jenny found
it a great trial, but we left
every thing nicely arranged &
Our continued news of the
contentment & happiness of
the children makes her quite
contented. Cora Richardson
has the care of the children &
the house, John Bostwick
takes care of your private
business & mine, Mr Pomeroy
runs the Bank. & Mr Lockwood
has been appointed my assistan[ t ]
Reason:
& takes care of the RN business
so I think everything will
run smooth at home for
a month or two
Aunty Worden

with her until good weather
& then open her own house
for the summer.
Nelly writes us (through Cora)
almost every day and our
letter from her this morning
says she has a letter from
you written at Madras with
which she is greatly pleased.
My last letter from you is
from the same place and
I am glad you find such
a pleasant resting place with
the Napiers.
Your letters to
me are opened at home copied
by Aunty for Fred
& myself & the copies distribution
by mail to us, I am concern-ed
to know that Freeman
not prove a good servant for
we had all hoped he would
be of great assistance to you
if you should think it well

to send him home when you
get to Europe, I can hunt

first two months which I forgot
& did not send until Nov 1st I
presume she has since written
Henry that she has received the
money. Jenny has just
received Olive's
telling us of you continued
good health and she will
answer it from here
At Salt Lake I called on Brigham
Young
of you & asked particularly that
I should give you his kind
regards when I wrote next

reaching Auburn about the
1st or middle of June
Since I left home I see that
Weed
have burned out & that the
firm lose 300,000 over their
insurance, Fred I think sold
out his interest to them, some
time since but he probably
holds from $5,000 to $8,000 of their
notes, I trust he will sustain
no loss however by them.
Mr Grant
ency of the S. C. R. R. & Char Briggs
of the City Bank has taken his
place. Moses Grinnell
just been removed by the President
which he thinks pretty hard, as
he contributed $5000 towards
the Presidents house [ purchas ]
Alternate Text: purchase, so
he tells the Post as much in a
private letter which of course
gets into print.

I have met many of
your friends here among
others Mr Ralston
all of hom whom desire
to be remembered to you.
I am advised by Bostwick of
the receipt & payment of
your drafts of £1200 drawn
at Madras and believe that
all the drafts up to that time
have come in & been paid.
Augustus writes to Jenny that
it has been decided not to
remove him to Louisville & that
he shall probably remain in
Charleston during the summer.
I am at a loss to know where
to address you now & therefore
send this to Fred to forward as
he may have some better information
than I. Love to all in which
Jenny joins
