Nephew of WHS. Graduated from College of New Jersey in 1852, after which he worked in the engineering department of the U.S. Navy. He then studied law with his uncle, Silas Dickerson Canfield, after which he was admitted to the New Jersey bar. He practiced law in Paterson, NJ.
