From 1876 to 1877 he worked at the law office of Emott, Burnett, & Hammond in NYC while attending lectures at Columbia College Law School. He then practiced law in Buffalo for many years, closing his law office temporarily in 1894 to oversee the management of The Genesee, a large hotel in Buffalo which belonged to an estate that he was in charge of. Never married.
