Julius Rhoades was born on January 20, 1801, in Chesterfield, Massachusetts, to Lucy (Porter) and Samuel Rhoades.
Julius Rhoades was a prominent New York lawyer. In Albany politics, Rhoades served as the Master in Chancery and the Taxing Master during the 1830s. Throughout his career, Rhoades worked closely with William Henry Seward, but he did not win favor with his wife, Frances Seward. In a letter sent to her sister, Lazette Worden, on June 8, 1829, Frances declared Rhoades “the most intolerably imprudent man I ever knew” after he kissed her before a cabin full of people on a boat departing from Albany.
Julius’ spouse was Elizabeth Rhoades. He died about 1852 at the age of fifty-one.
