Biography
An elusive character mentioned in Henry's letters only as "the Consul at Nassau." It is confirmed that a Mr. Thomas Kirkpatrick was serving as U.S. consul to Nassau from 1865-? through correspondence with Legislation and also directly to William Henry, cited below. Finding further information about Mr. Kirkpatrick was tricky, but a NYT death notice for Ann E., his wife, proves that he was indeed consul and also had some connection to Albany and Auburn ("Albany and Auburn, N.Y., papers please copy."). Searching census records brought up only one likely result--a record of Thomas and Ann E Kirkpatrick living in Albany in 1855, which perhaps explains why the Albany papers were to be notified of Ann's death. Ann's date of birth from the Census record roughly lines up with that given in her Find-A-Grave source. In the census, Thomas is listed as "prison inspector," which isn't consul... but perhaps he did both? Further searching fills out the details of Thomas's life. One source gives the following biography: "Thomas Kirkpatrick was an American politician from New York. He lived in Albany, New York, and was an alderman, elected in the Tenth Ward in 1843, and Overseer of the Poor. In 1853, he was elected, on the Whig ticket, Inspector of State Prisons, and was in office from 1854 to 1856. He was Warden of Auburn State Prison from January 1860 to January 1864. In 1871, he was again elected State Prison Inspector, this time on the Republican ticket. He was in office from 1872 to 1874, but was defeated for re-election in 1874." No mention of his being Consul at Nassau, but he was a warden at Auburn prison--perhaps, again, why the Auburn papers were to be notified of Ann's death. And the lapse in his biography from 1864 to 1871 exactly corresponds with the time he would have been in Nassau. So for these reasons, I believe Thomas Kirkpatrick the Auburn Prison Warden and Thomas Kirkpatrick the U.S. Consul at Nassau to be the same person.
