Biography
Sartiges was from an old family of Auvergne and was the son of the prefect Charles-Eugène-Gabriel Sartiges. He entered the diplomatic service in 1830 as an attache in Rome . Successively, he was secretary of legation in Brazil, in Greece, and in Constantinople, charge d'affaires in Persia, and Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States from 1851 to 1860, the Netherlands from 1860 to 1862, and in Italy he was ambassador to the Holy-Seat from 1864 to 1868. He was appointed Senator of the Second Empire August 13, 1868. He married in America (September 21, 1852) Anna Thorndike, who bore him three children:
Eugene Sartiges, born in Washington in June 1853; Marie Elisabeth Sartiges, born March 16, 1855, in Washington; Louis Sartiges, born in Paris October 27, 1859. There are portraits of both him and his wife, Countess Madame Anna de Sartiges, in the Seward House Museum.
