Biography
McDonald, Daniel, D.D., an Episcopal minister in America, was bom near Bedford, Westchester County, N. Y., about 1787, and was educated at Middlebury College. Having taught for some time, he was ordained in 1810, and became rector of St, Peter's, Auburn, N. Y. He subsequently took charge of the academy in Fairfield, Herkimer Co., where he superintended the preparation of candidates for holy orders. In 1821 he was made D.D. by Columbia College; removed to Geneva, and served for many years as missionary in the village of Waterloo. He became professor in the College of Geneva in 1825, and continued so until his death, March 25, 1830.
His works are A Sermon in the Churchman's Magazine, and A Series of Articles in the Gospel Messeager, signed P. The branch school at Geneva was opened in the vestry schoolhouse of Trinity Church, Geneva, in June of the same year, by the Rev. Daniel M'Donald, Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Scripture Interpretation, and the Rev. Orin Clark, Professor of Systematic Theology. McDonald became principal of Geneva Academy in 1821. Previously at Fairfield Academy, McDonald was principal of Geneva Academy until 1825 when it became Geneva College (later Hobart College, now Hobart and William Smith College). Mentioned in 18250221WHS_SSS: WHS says Dr McDonald "has within a few years raised that Academy from the dust to a rank so high that the Regents have chartered it as a College."
Daniel married Percy Talmadge. Percy died one week after giving birth to their son, Samuel. Daniel later married Percy's sister, Phoebe.
