Biography
Hasbrouck Davis was a Christian minister and lawyer, but was commissioned to join the Civil War in 1862 as Lieutenant Colonel of the 12th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry. In February 1864, he was promoted to Colonel after his achievements, including helping his unit escape and not lose a single man, even though they were surrounded at the Battle of Harpers Ferry in September 1862. He held various commands throughout the war, and eventually resigned August 1, 1865. After the war, he went on a tour of Europe aboard the "SS Cambria," which experienced a devastating wreck off the shore of Ireland--only 1 passenger survived the wreck, but it was unfortunately not Hasbrouck, whose body was never recovered from the sea.
Hasbrouck married Martha W. Stickney Davis and they had one daughter together, Elizabeth Searle Davis Sprague.
