Biography
Abbott Lawrence was the brother of Amos Lawrence, and he became Amos' apprentice as a merchant when he was 15 years old. In 1834 he was elected a representative in Congress as Whig. He served in the House of Representatives from 1835-1837, and again from 1839-1840. In 1844 he became president of the Essex company, and from 1849-52 he served as the United States minister to Great Britain. In 1847 he gave $50,000 to Harvard university for the scientific school that now bears his name. He married Catherine (nee Bigelow) with whom he had three children: Timoth, Annie, Katherine, and Abbott.
