Biography
Serranus Clinton Hastings was elected as a Democrat to the 29th Congress and served from December 1846 to March 1847, he was chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Iowa from 1848-49. He then moved to California and served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of California 1849-51 and Attorney General of California in 1851.
In the 1850s, Hastings managed a forced labor camp and organized genocidal "Indian hunts" that killed most of the Native American population of Mendocino County, California, as confirmed by a commission established by Hastings Law School.
