Biography

From 1837 through 1854, Dr. Butler served several congregations in New York City, Palmyra, Boston, and Trinity Church in Washington, D.C. Henry Clay and Daniel Webster were communicants at the Trinity Church in DC and the Sewards were visitors of this church. From 1849-1853, he was the Chaplain for the US Senate. Along with other addresses, he is known for giving funeral addresses for John C Calhoun in 1850 and Henry Clay in 1852. Between 1854-57 he lived in Ohio and then returned to DC until 1861.
