Biography
Henry C Godwin is the son of Abraham Godwin, Jr., who served as Postmaster General of Paterson in 1816 after his brother, who previously held the position, committed suicide. In a letter from Augustus Canfield to William Henry Seward on October 2, 1849, Augustus says that Henry Godwin has applied for the position of Postmaster after his father's death. As Henry is only 23 at the time and a new resident, Augustus does not believe he should be appointed, but instead asks William Henry Seward to consider Dr. Frederick S. Weller. Records show that Henry was never elected as Postmaster, and instead was a lawyer in Binghamton, NY. Henry Godwin married Helen Jackson on March 15, 1854 in Binghamton, NY and apparently disappeared during the Civil War; no one knows what happened to him.
