Biography

Whiting graduated from West Point in 1845, two years before AHS so they attended the school together for a few years. He graduated first in his class, with the highest academic record ever achieved by a cadet at the time. He stayed in the Army and the Corps of Engineers until 1861 when he resigned to serve in the Confederate Army.
