Born and raised in NY, he served as a state civil engineer for the state from 1839 to the mid 1840s. He moved to New Jersey with his wife, Harriet Williams and their children where he resumed his engineering work. He became the chief engineer of the Morris Canal Co in NJ in 1845 and later became the company's president.
