In a letter to Frances Miller Seward dated January 27, 1856, Clarinda Miller McClallen mentioned the fire at the "Auburn House" and speculation that "Smith" had set the fire. On January 23, 1856, the Auburn Weekly American reported that the Auburn House "was occupied at the time by Z. M. Smith and used as a Ladies Seminary." Zoeth M. Smith is listed as a teacher at a female seminary in the 1855 New York Census.
