Biography
Bernard Smith was born in County Cavan Ireland on September 12, 1812. He was ordained on September 21, 1839, in Rome. One of his briefest assignments was as pro-rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome. The college was founded on December 7, 1859, and Father Smith served in the place of Father William G. McCloskey, until March 3, 1860. Smith retired from his professorship at the Urban College in 1880. Dom Bernard Smith died on December 11, 1892 of pneumonia at San Callisto and was buried in the Campo Verano,.
