Biography

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is best known as the author of the famous "Frankenstein." Born nearly at the turn of the century in 1797, she experienced many changes in her life, especially as a part of a radical family. Her mother is the well-known Mary Wollstonecraft. One radical belief was the idea of free love; over many years her relationship with Percy Bysshe Shelley was unofficial and passionate, though they eventually married in 1816. Her life included much moving and several pregnancies, jealousies, and tragedies. She appears in William Henry Seward's letter of August 16, 1859 with regard to the inscription "Cor Cordium" on her husband's grave in Rome. She died in 1851.
