Biography

John Potter Stockton was the U.S. Minister Resident to the Holy See from 1858-1861. He later served as U.S. senator from New Jersey, from 1865-1866. The election was in dispute and the senate declared the seat vacant but he was later reelected and served in the senate from 1869-1875. After his time in senate, her served as Attorney General of New Jersey from 1877-1897.
