Biography
Stephen S. Austin was born around 1815. In 1848, the city of Auburn, New York was incorporated and Austin was listed as an Alderman of the 4th Ward. He was the Principle Keeper of the Auburn Correctional Facility from 1860-1865. According to a letter written by Frances Miller Seward to her husband William Henry Seward, dated February 14, 1861, Mr. Austin called at their Auburn home to express his intent to attend the presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. Austin also appealed to the Sewards for a position in the State Department for his son-in-law Norman Lester. He died July 24, 1865 and is buried in Fort Hill Cemetery, Auburn, NY.
