She was the second wife of Henry Schoolcraft. She was from the South and owned slaves so her marriage created tension between Henry and his two children from his first marriage. Mary was an author, she published the novel The Black Gauntlet: A Tale of Plantation Life in South Carolina which was a pro-slavery book.
