Biography
Samuel Freeman Miller was born in Richmond, Kentucky, the son of Frederick and Patsy (Freeman) Miller. He received a medical degree from Transylvania University in 1818 and practiced medicine in Barbourville, Kentucky for twelve years. Miller transitioned from medicine to the law and passed the bar in 1847. In 1850, he relocated to Iowa where he became involved in Republican politics. In 1862, he was selected as a justice to the U.S. Supreme Court under the Lincoln Administration.
