Biography
Catherine M. Tappan Logan was a New Jersey resident. She was the daughter of Abraham Tappen, who at one point served as the Sheriff of Morris County, NJ. Her husband, Dorastus B. Logan, was the Captain of New Jersey's 11th Volunteer Regiment during the Civil War. Dorastus was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg, and Catherine does not appear to have remarried.
Catherine is the subject of a letter DeWitt Clinton Jayne sent to William Henry Seward on December 2, 1864. In it, he asks if Henry can provide any assistance to the widowed Catherine, and notes that she is currently working as the chief Matron of Sing Sing Prison.
