Martha Washington Seabrook de Lasteyrie was born in Rockville, South Carolina, the daughter of William Seabrook and his second wife Elizabeth Emma Edings Seabrook. Martha married Ferdinand Charles de Lasteyrie in 1846. The couple had a son, Robert Charles de Lasterie. Martha is referenced in Frances "Fanny" Seward's 1866 diary when she met her husband and son during their stay in Washington, DC. According to a letter of introduction in the collection of Bowdoin Library from John Bigelow, US Minister to France, to Nathaniel Prentice Hall, dated c. May 1, 1866, the Marquis de Lasteyrie had traveled to Washington to lobby for the return of his wife's lands in South Carolina after the Civil War.
