George Frederick Seward (1840 – November 28, 1910) was an insurance executive[1] and United States diplomat during the late 19th century. He served as "Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary" to China from 1876 until 1880.
Seward, a native of Florida, New York,[1] was appointed to the position of U.S. Consul in Shanghai on 1861, U.S. Consul General in Shanghai on 1863, and U.S. Minister to China on January 7, 1876. He presented his credentials to the Chinese on April 24, 1876. Seward served as minister until August 16, 1880.[2]
He died in New York, November 28, 1910.[1]
George Seward was the nephew of former United States Secretary of State William H. Seward.[1]
