Auburn Dec 15 th
My dear Son,
I was just beginning to think
it was time to have a letter from you
when yours came this morning– I am
sorry you give us no promise of a
visit Christmas or New Years– I cannot
yet fix on any time when I shall go
to Washington – I am in no hurry &
shall persuade Aunty
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03
to stay as long as
I can– She was not well at the
time her last letter was written and
a little homesick– George Andrews
Birth: 1821-09-03 Death: 1885-11-18Certainty: Probable

is domiciled at our house– I do not
know whose room he occupies–
I have heard of Dr. Hague
Unknown
as a
very popular preacher– I think the
popular taste inclines to Theatrical
preaching– I certainly prefer the
preacher described by Cowper
Birth: 1731-11-26 Death: 1800-04-25
as
“Simple grave sincere– – –
In language plain, and plain in manner”
Page 2

“Decent, solemn, chaste, & natural in gesture.”
I received a letter from
Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11
yesterday written at New York
the day he was to sail for Cuba
x

Cuba

Last Saturday– he goes there previous
to going to his working ground– He
has been three or four days in Washington.
His vessel was finished and sent
on to Key West – He was detained
waiting for remittances from Washington.
Fanny’s
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
birth day was passed
satisfactorily by the entertainment
of two or three young companions
Unknown
– I
was sorry to be confined to my room
at the time– I have Fanny
drive out with Willis
Birth: 1830
somewhere
every day for the benefit of the horse
if not her own– I find it generally
too cold for myself– though I think
I shall be able to ride in a sleigh
when sleighing comes– I hope you
will come to go with me–
Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
left no overcoat here except

that you wore to the fire– If you
will let me know the price I
will send you a check– I am not
willing to have you without–
I find the pantaloons which I will
mend and send to you–
I hear nothing new here– The course
of lectures for the young men’s Association
has commenced– The first by Dr
Hickock
Birth: 1798-12-29 Death: 1876-06-10
was very generally attended
and I believe approved–
I have not seen Jenny
Birth: 1839-11-18 Death: 1913-11-09
since the day
Aunty left– She is I think profitably
engaged with lessons in History &
Astronomy– The weather is milder
than is usual at this season–
I am not well to day and forget
much I would say to you–
Fanny sends love– God bless you
Mother–
