Editorial Note

August 9, 1866 was a Thursday
Aug. /66
My dearest Father,
I have only a
very few moments to write–
as the carriage is coming
to take me my second drive
of today– it is after
dinner, & I am to be
home before the dew falls.
So I will not attempt
to reply at this time
to your welcome letter of
the 6th – but will only
send you a little “health
report” – No chill today –

fever as usual – coughed a
good deal last night and
this morning – continue to
feel better and stronger –
drove twelve miles this
morning. Aunty

was here
this afternoon – examined my
lungs a little, & still says
the right one is most
affected. I wish
I could tell you what
a charming day I have
had – how many

the hours – but I must
say good night, with the
