Editorial Note

Based on the context of the letter, other letters sent on dates close to this, and the fact that March 5th was a Thursday, it can be inferred that this letter was written on Sunday, April 5th.
March 5th
My dear Augustus
I was glad to get your
letter and to know you were well – We
are still having winter – last night the
snow fell three inches deep and this
morning the mercury was at 21 above
zero – pretty cold for the 5th of April–
I think this storm extended over the Whole
North – so you have it in Boston – Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29

and Jenny
Birth: 1839-11-18 Death: 1913-11-09
went to N. York on Wednesday
to be away two weeks – Will says
John Bostwick's
Birth: 1829-07-22 Death: 1872-06-22
firm has not failed
but they came very near it – Will has
no kind of money interest in the concern–
never has had– I had a letter from
Anna
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02
on Wednesday – She sent me
a ticket for the Senate Gallery for the next
day – They are distributed each day
of the trial to the members of Congress, Sen-
ators & Cabinet offices – They have

two each day for which they have many
applications – She says Father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
& Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
– think
the time of their stay in Washington is lim-
ited – but she cannot think the impeach-
ment will be sustained – Neither do
I – Father told me when he was here
he was sure it would be – but I can see
that members of Congress are losing
their interest & perhaps growing timid –
The defense is very able & nothing is
left undone by Mr. Evarts
Birth: 1818-02-06 Death: 1901-02-28
– who is doubtless
advised by your Father – Anna says
it was twelve weeks on Monday since
the accident to her finger – it is improving
but is yet far from well – She writes
that they have received intelligence
of the death of their neighbor Mr. Tayloe
Birth: 1796-05-21 Death: 1868-02-25

of Paralysis – in Rome – Hope you
will go to hear Dickens
Birth: 1812-02-07 Death: 1870-06-09
read – I was sorry
to miss it in Washington– Many persons
went from here to Syracuse to hear him
When he read there – Some were pleased
Page 3

and many were disappointed – Mrs.
Wright
Birth: 1806-12-25 Death: 1875-01-04
said he did not answer her
expectations – but she was not sorry she
went — There is nothing new here
– the Episcopalians are keeping Lent
and taking down their church to
rebuild on larger and grander
style – they think the present one is
not large enough to accommodate all
who want to go – I think it is – particularly
as there is a new society organized in
this part of the city and steps are taken
to build a church on the corner of Fulton
& East Genesee Street – Mr – Chedell
Birth: 1806-04-24 Death: 1875-06-19

is to give the lot – a very pleasant
and central one – I am at my
own house again where it would be
very pleasant if the weather was fine
but all places are very much alike
in winter– I am expecting Frances
Birth: 1826-12-12 Death: 1909-08-24
and
Frank
Birth: 1854-02-13 Death: 1931-05-23
this week to make me a visit
preparatory to their going up to the

Lake for the summer– I hope you will
come here once during the season
you seem further off in Boston than
when in Washington – Fanny
Birth: 1848
would
send love if she was here instead of
N. York –
Your affectionate
Aunty –
