Hiram Powers

Biography
Hiram Powers was a sculptor. He was born in Vermont, and in his youth moved to Ohio where he served as a clerk and clockmakers apprentice. He learned the art of sculpting from a German sculptor. In 1835 he moved to Washington, where he modelled busts of well-known men. In 1837 he moved to Florence. In 1843 he created "Greek Slave" the most famous of his statues.
